Fuel economy can drop slowly enough that you do not notice it right away. A few more trips to the gas station, a lower number on the dashboard, or a tank that does not last as long as it used to may seem like normal driving variation at first. Sometimes it is. Weather, traffic, hills, fuel quality, and driving habits can all change mileage. But when fuel economy keeps getting worse, the vehicle may be working harder than it should.
